There’s something quietly magical about a single letter given room to bloom. Long before printed books, medieval scribes lavished their greatest artistry on illuminated initials—those ornate capital letters twined with vines, flowers, and gold. This season, that centuries-old tradition gets a vibrant contemporary revival at the Branciforte Branch Library, where local artist Clay Madden presents Illustrated Letters of the Alphabet, on view now through September 30th.
The Exhibit
Working in gouache watercolor, Madden transforms each letter of the alphabet into its own richly imagined world. Gouache—an opaque cousin of traditional watercolor—gives the work its signature look: saturated color with crisp edges and bold graphic punch. The result feels at once nostalgic and fresh, calling to mind illuminated manuscripts, Art Nouveau posters, and vintage botanical prints, all filtered through Madden’s distinctive eye.
