Our Community Reads 2026

Spare Parts Selected for OUr Community Reads 2026

On September 25th close to 150 community members gathered in three separate library branches to cast their votes to select the book for the 2026 Season of Our Community Reads.  Our Community Reads brings members of the Santa Cruz County community together exploring one book that sparks connection, conversation, and inspiration.

The voting parties were so much fun!  People nibbled on delicious appetizers, sipped beverages, and discussed the four choices being presented:  Spare Parts, All the Beauty in the World, Orbital, and Many Things Under a Rock.

Each book offers multiple themes that are ideal for Our Community Reads, where the goal is to bring people together at events designed around particular aspects of the selected book. Such events are typically films, panel discussions, field trips, art workshops, music, writing, book groups, and much more.

Ultimately, Spare Parts by Joshua Davis was the selected book, winning almost half of the votes. This book is sure to resonate with our community in a myriad of ways, and the Event Planning Committee cannot wait to begin working on the Calendar of Events!

“I was completely floored by the four thoughtful, articulate presentations. Amazing!”  Gwen, Aptos

As usual, the OCR volunteers went above and beyond with four excellent book presentations, a group discussion, an easy voting process, plus wine & tasty snacks. It was a pleasure to participate in the event!” Joan, Capitola

“All in attendance were very positive and had a hard time deciding…it was such a well-rounded and competitive list of books and so well presented…” Nancy, Scotts Valley
