Karen Whitker’s Native American art will be on exhibit at the Aptos Library from October 12 to 31.

“I am originally from the southeast and have always been involved in some form of the stained glass, drawing, lighting, and music including piano. Since moving to Santa Cruz, I have been affected by the inspiration the environment offers. I primarily work in acrylics, sometimes combining pastel and watercolor if required. I am strongly moved by the ocean, clouds, and tranquil landscapes. Experimenting with new techniques and color often to new ideas of possibilities in capturing ideas. I describe my work as having a subtlety of subjects where I favor bridging the gap between pure abstraction and representational art. The elemental landscape is a constant in many of my pieces but abstraction allows for a more personal level of interpretation. Painting for me is a process, creating involves as I take the painting to a new level in its own as a life of its own. I get taken away from the day to day, but many times affected by my experiences. Music is American and ambient music as it allows me to enter into areas of introspection and emotion. I hope my work does the same for you.”
