The La Selva Beach Library Friends are pleased to present an exhibition of prints by local artist Fran Majors, on view now through November 17.
For Fran, the visual arts have always been a way of understanding the world — a tool for taking in and interpreting experience. Since her teens she has explored many mediums, but printmaking has remained her home base. What began with screen printing eventually branched into etching, woodblock prints, and beyond. Even as her careers led her down other paths, the need to do creative work never left.
Over the years, recurring themes have surfaced in her work. For a time, she focused on masks, seeing them as a metaphor for the balance between our internal and external selves — a metaphor that only grew more resonant during the pandemic.
Visitors will also find a landscape of La Selva Beach in the show, a nod to a community that has held a special place in the artist’s heart for many years. Her family lived and worked here, she spent her teaching career at nearby Renaissance High School, and her son attended the Secret Garden Preschool.
