The La Selva Beach Library Friends invite you to a free book-to-movie community event.
We’re featuring Nomadland, the Oscar-winning adaptation of Jessica Bruder’s Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century. Bruder spent three years reporting among older Americans who had left conventional housing behind and taken to the road in vans and RVs, following seasonal work across the West. The film that came out of that book is quiet, unhurried, and full of real people playing versions of themselves. The kind of movie that gets better the more you talk about it afterward.

Read it first, if you can
If you have time before the event, pick up a copy of the book and experience the story first. Several copies will be available on the Friends shelves near the self-checkout area. Reading isn’t required — come either way.
The discussion
After the screening, the post-film discussion will be led by Logan Walker, Director of Programming for the Santa Cruz Film Festival and a lecturer in film studies at UCSC and San José State University. He includes Nomadland in his lecture series, American Cinema 1960 to the Present, so he comes to it with a lot to say about where the film sits in the last sixty years of American moviemaking. Bring your questions and your disagreements.
