In honor of Black History Month, Friends of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries is proud to support a compelling community event that centers on courage, accountability, and the enduring pursuit of justice.
On Saturday, February 7, at 2:00 p.m., Santa Cruz Public Libraries invites the public to a special screening of The Inquisitor at the Capitola Branch Library (2005 Wharf Road). The film and the conversation that follows offers a powerful exploration of the life and legacy of Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, one of the most influential voices in American civil rights and constitutional law.
A Voice That Changed the Nation
The Inquisitor examines the extraordinary public career of Barbara Jordan, the groundbreaking Texas congresswoman whose moral clarity and commanding intellect helped shape pivotal moments in U.S. history. From the Watergate impeachment hearings to landmark civil rights debates, Jordan’s words demanded accountability at the highest levels of government.
Beyond her public achievements, the film also thoughtfully explores Jordan’s personal life, illuminating the complexities of her intersectional identity and the private challenges she navigated in a political landscape marked by exclusion and discrimination. Together, these perspectives paint a fuller portrait of a leader whose impact continues to resonate today.
Community Conversation & Special Guests
Following the screening, attendees are invited to stay for an in-person panel discussion moderated by Ayo Banjo, community organizer, keynote speaker, elected delegate and Vice Chair of the Progressive Caucus for the California Democratic Party, and Project Director for the Village Project.
The panel will feature voices deeply engaged in local and statewide civic life, including:
- Elaine Johnson, Executive Director of Housing Santa Cruz, President of the NAACP Santa Cruz County Branch, and member of the Santa Cruz County Democratic Party
- Ami Chen Mills, member of AAPI Santa Cruz, elected member of the Democratic Central Committee (District 3), and radio and podcast host of Moment of Truth
- Carmelita Limas, Board Member at The Diversity Center
The event will also include a virtual visit with filmmaker Angela Tucker, Director and Producer of The Inquisitor, offering insight into the creation of the film and Barbara Jordan’s lasting relevance.
