There is something special about hearing a story read aloud by the person who wrote it. On September 19, the Friends of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries, Garfield Park chapter, are hosting an afternoon built around exactly that.
The day has two parts. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the book sale is open. Shelves of used books at prices that make it easy to take a chance on something unfamiliar, with every dollar going back into supporting the Garfield Park Branch Library.
From 1:30 to 3 p.m., the Westside Authors Series presents featured reader Helene Simkin Jara. Helene is a Santa Cruz author, actor, director, and teacher whose short stories, poems, and plays have appeared in The Porter Gulch Review, Catamaran, Mindprints, and elsewhere, and who has published several books, including Turn Left at the Gorilla and Go Down the Hall, Life on the Stand, and Me! Me! Me!
Then the microphone opens to everyone. Bring a poem, a page of prose, or something you wrote. Or just sit under the canopy and listen, which is its own kind of participation.
There will be snacks, including delicious cookies from Chef Stephany, and they’re on us.
No sign-up required and nothing to buy at the door. Just come by.
