Storyteller Totem

Storyteller Totem: A New Art Installation at La Selva Beach library

The newly installed art piece adjacent to the Florido Lawn involves a lot of La Selva Beach history.  The artist, Kristen Kolbeck, has lived here full time for the last 20 years and spent some of her elementary school years camping in a tent on her parents’ Arbolado property.  She is a retired elementary school teacher and loves to read.

Kristen created the totem of ceramic books to honor books and rejoice in the process of reading aloud. It was part of the most recent Pajaro Valley Arts installation at Sierra Azul Nursery. Her hope is that sharing words and sharing stories in discussions allows all of us to explore differences.

Perched on top of the stack of books, the Storyteller is reading a Carl Sandburg story,  “The White Horse Girl and the Blue Wind Boy”, which can be found in his Rootabaga Stories collection.  The story involves the ocean so it seems quite appropriate for its location.

The La Selva Beach Library Friends hope you will enjoy it and hope you read whatever stories and books suit your fancy.
